Festspielfrühling Rügen

Festspielfrühling Rügen

From March 16 to 25, 2012, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will be launching its “Festspielfrühling Rügen”. From the earliest days of the Festspiele MV, the breath-taking landscape of the island, with its beaches, horizons, and lavish architecture, has served as a backdrop for innumerable concerts during the summer season. Now the traditionally calmer pre-season in spring will be enlivened and enriched with the “Festspielfrühling” and a high-caliber, attractive program of music and culture.

The members of the renowned Fauré Quartett, arguably the most exciting German chamber-music ensemble at the present time, have taken over the artistic direction of the program. The four musicians – Erika Geldsetzer (violin), Sascha Frömbling (viola), Konstantin Heidrich (violoncello), and Dirk Mommertz (piano) – have been represented on major concert stages throughout the world for many years and have repeatedly received the ECHO Klassik and the German Record Critics’ Award (PdSK). They are looking forward to their first artistic directorship with enthusiasm and anticipation. “As a member of the large Prize Winner family of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we are proud and happy to be presenting the first ‘Festspielfrühling Rügen’ in the coming year,” said Dirk Mommertz, pianist of the Furé Quartett.  “With us, audiences can look forward to magnificent concerts with magnificent artists! We have put together an extraordinary programme full of highlights and surprises!”

For the 13 concerts on the island, the quartet has invited top-class musicians, artist friends, and companions, like pianist Martin Stadtfeld, clarinetist and Festspiele Prize Winner Matthias Schorn, the NDR Bigband, and prominent television personalities, such as Alfred Biolek and Sky du Mont.

The musical journey through the history of chamber music stretches from Bach, Biber, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms all the way to the ethereal sounds of the “Wellness Concert” and offers lieder recitals and piano recitals, as well as musical-literary evenings and large-scale chamber concerts. The “Encore” programme after most events offers guests the opportunity to meet the artists in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Passionate music-lovers can further expand their musical horizons in the Master Class for Lay Musicians offered by the Fauré Quartett.

Although the “Festspielfrühling” events will take audiences to familiar venues, like the Selliner Seebrücke and the Theater and Marstall in Putbus, and transform historic chapels and barns into atmospheric concert stages; they will also be discovering completely new, unusual places that capture the charming local substance of Rügen. In the Nebelsignalstation on Cape Arkona, the northernmost point of the island, an Impressionistic programme will be presented at sunset ("Au bord de la mer" on March 21, 2012); in the Nordperdhalle Göhren, where otherwise athletes come to train and compete, the Fauré Quartett will join up with the NDR Bigband ("NDR Bigband feat. Fauré Quartett" on March 22, 2012).

The “Festspielfrühling” is being made possible through the commitment of numerous sponsors and supporters, including the TMG and TZR, the administration of the Baltic Searesort of Binz, the municipalityof Putgarten, and the administrative district of Rügen.
